Lugarno Lions Club - Our Proud Heritage
The Lions Club of Lugarno was chartered on 15th May 1974, the year the famous Lugarno Ferry was decommissioned. The club's first major activity was to raise money for the survivors of Cyclone Tracy and to establish a base for well-known heart surgeon Dr Victor Chang, to continue his heart transplant surgery. In 1975 the club raised over $500,000 and was the catalyst for the construction of the Cameron Wing at St Vincent's Hospital. The Cameron Wing was demolished in the early 2000s but the foundation stone recognising the work of Lions remains in the new building. In the time since charter, Lugarno Lions Club has raised and distributed in excess of $2,000,000 for the needy.
Where is Lugarno? On the northern shores of the picturesque Georges River flowing into Botany Bay, Lugarno is located some 20km south-west of Sydney in New South Wales, Australia, on the Lugarno Peninsula.
