LIONS SPEAKING FOR THOSE WHO CANNOT SPEAK FOR THEMSELVES Early Intervention Preschool Autism Spectrum Disorders Education and Therapy NEWS FLASH:.....Our motion for this project was accepted at the Launceston Convention by the Lions of Multiple District 201
What is Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)? Imagine a life where you’re faced with constant problems interacting with others, have impaired communication and restricted interests as well as being daunted by the world because your senses are overloaded by ordinary sights and sounds. That’s what life with ASD is like, and it affects one in 119 children. Signs of ASD are generally clear before a child is three. The child tends to be anxious, has poor attention and motivation, responds unusually to regular things, has delayed or absent speech, odd behaviour and is noticeably different from other children. There’s currently no known cause, or no cure. But there is a way of treating it.
Why target Preschool Autism Education & Therapy? Recent studies have shown that children with ASD and intellectual development delays who receive preschool therapy have a one in three chance of being able to enter the mainstream education system and go on to lead a normal productive life with little if any special support. Early intervention, specialised education and support is the answer to ensuring children with ASD lead a bright, positive and integrated life with the world. The key to this is funding. Currently, there isn’t enough government funding for families with children with autism. As such, families are bearing the bulk of the annual $30,000 cost of treatment until the child goes to school.
Why are Lions getting involved? Many Lions are affected by this disability. You may have ASD in your family or know friends who deal with ASD. Try asking for a show of hands at a club meeting for friends and colleagues who are affected – YOU MAY BE SURPRISED! Research strongly indicates that intervention at an early stage can greatly improve a child’s chances of leading a “normal” lifestyle. There are many sponsored therapies available to children who are autistic once school age is attained however these benefits are not available, except at high cost to parents, for preschool children. These are the important years when it comes to children’s attaining the social skills for their future. At the recent District 201N5 Convention, Lugarno Lions Club tabled a Motion to be submitted to the Multiple District (MD) Convention in Launceston in April 2011.
